Parts Agency Newsletter 01/2018

Dear Readers of the Tesat-Spacecom Parts Agency Newsletter,

as in recent years, Tesat-Spacecom participated in the Satellite Conference in Washington D.C.. Many conversations and presentations confirmed that all players of the space community are looking for innovative solutions and improvements to reduce costs and industrialize their business.

Tesat-Spacecom as space equipment and PCB manufacturer consequently follows this path since several years.

One corner stone of our approach is the early involvement of EEE parts expertise in the design phase. Tesat-Spacecom’s EEE parts engineers are trained in materials and processes, manufacturability, assembly and testing and all related issues. The engineering team bundles the entire EEE parts know-how that is required and is well-trained to perform complete fault tests, failure and construction analysis and various other investigations on site. This includes design-in capabilities in close engineering co-operation with boards design and layout and the search for alternative EEE parts for specific applications or as replacement needs identified by our obsolescence management tool.

This know-how on EEE parts, space engineering, processes and equipment design are services we also offer to our Parts Agency customer base and to new customers that are just entering the space market. This includes engineering packages as e.g. the investigation of candidates and respective application scenarios for New Space requests.

We are looking forward to seeing you for interesting talks, e.g. on the ILA Air Show in Berlin.

For any questions, for your feedback or topics you wish to be addressed in the next newsletter please contact Dr. Frederik Küchen.

The benefit of technical expertise and avoiding high MOQs - another interesting service of Tesat Parts Agency

With an exceptional service Tesat is offering its customers the chance to order certain parts for lower quantities than the determined MOQ amount.

In cooperation with ESA, Tesat started a case example to order the minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 100 pcs of a Video processor ASIC which is applicable for optical satellite instruments and earth observation. For more flexibility in case of testing and qualification, the lot was split into EM and FM models. Tesat takes care of additional services like handling, incoming inspection and documentation check before storing the space qualified ASICs on Tesat stock for further distribution to customers who are interested in lower quantities.

Ordering the full MOQ can be a high investment for small companies and involves the risk to have too much overrun parts on stock in the future. Moreover, customers can get “ready to use” parts for flight or engineering applications.

Meanwhile three different clients have taken advantage of this service offer. Both sides thereby benefit by close co-operation and positive feedback from customer side due to the additional technical expertise provided by Tesat.

ILA Berlin Air Show

pa nl 01 18 ilaThe international Berlin Air Show is the most popular and biggest exhibition for aerospace industry in Europe. From 25th to 29th of April the leading international suppliers will meet at the Berlin ExpoCenter Airport, Schönefeld to present high technology, current products and trends of development from all business areas of aerospace industry. You can find more information about the ILA Berlin Air Show here: https://www.ila-berlin.de

Also Tesat-Spacecom will participate and present their wide range of products as well as the provided services of Tesat Parts Agency. Take the advantage to visit this International Air Show for contacts and technical discussions with our team of experts. They will provide information about our procurement and engineering services and also available facilities for inspection for EEE parts in space applications.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Berlin!

Tesat-Spacecom is awarded with 'Certificate of Appreciation' by JAXA

pa nl 01 18 jaxa certificateIn March 2018 ERG project (JAXA) presented their 'Certificate of Appreciation' to Tesat-Spacecom, recognizing the contribution to the development of ERG spacecraft. The award was handed over during a meeting at Tesat's base in Backnang.

Dr. Takeshi Takashima, Mission Manager of ERG Project, honored especially Tesat's performances in providing important electric parts, its screening and technical support. He's very thankful for the sustainable cooperation. ERG (Exploration of energization and Radiation in Geospace) was launched in 2016, carrying nine cutting-edge instruments to research around the Van Allen belts. It has recently completed its science operating phase successfully.

In place of all Tesat employees, Dr. Frederik Kuechen, Head of Parts Agency, as well as Michael Moesken, Key Account Manager, accepted the award and expressed their thanks towards JAXA. The recognition is appreciated very much and motivates to work on further cooperation with JAXA.

New equipment at Tesat: CSAM

pa nl 01 18 csam1In response to the growing need for the analysis of COTS EEE components Tesat has invested in a state-of-the-art scanning acoustic microscope (SAM, also called C-SAM after its main inspection mode: C-mode).

CSAM is a quick and non-destructive analysis technique using ultrasound waves to detect defects in solid materials. Our new PVA SAM 301 system is capable of recording high-resolution acoustic images (echo and dynamic through scan) of plastic encapsulated devices in accordance with the applicable standards ESCC 25200, MIL-STD-1580 and JEDEC J-STD-020. It expands our existing excellent non-destructive analysis capability (real time X-ray and CT) to the detection of defects that cannot be found using radiography, such as non-metallic foreign material, delaminations, cracks and voids in plastic potting material. The through scan image below shows for example delaminated tie bars and lead fingers in black as well as moulding artefacts as dark spots. The CSAM can also be applied to a wide range of samples where delaminations are an issue.
